Nestled deep in the Bernese Oberland, Wengen and Lauterbrunnen offer a picture-perfect slice of the Swiss Alps, where majestic peaks tower over charming chalets, cascading waterfalls tumble into lush valleys, and crisp mountain air makes you forget the rest of the world exists. My journey through this alpine wonderland included train rides with jaw dropping views, visits to roaring waterfalls, a trip to the “Top of Europe,” and a stay at one of Wengen’s most historic hotels: Hotel Falken.

Arriving in Lauterbrunnen: Valley of 72 Waterfalls

The adventure began in Lauterbrunnen, a storybook village tucked into a U-shaped valley carved by glaciers. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs and snow capped peaks, Lauterbrunnen is famously home to 72 waterfalls, and you’ll spot several without even leaving the train station. Staubbach Falls, one of the tallest in Europe, plunges nearly 1,000 feet right next to the village, while Trümmelbach Falls thunders inside the mountain itself, accessible by a series of tunnels and walkways.

The sound of rushing water is constant here, a natural soundtrack to the stunning scenery. A stroll through the valley reveals meadows dotted with wildflowers, rustic barns, and the occasional ringing of cowbells echoing in the distance.

The Train to Wengen

From Lauterbrunnen, the only way to reach Wengen is by a short but spectacular cogwheel train ride. As the train climbs the mountainside, the valley opens up below, the waterfalls become ribbons of white against emerald slopes, and the air grows cooler and crisper. Wengen itself is a car-free village, adding to its peaceful charm. With no traffic noise, the only “rush hour” you’ll encounter is hikers heading to the trails or guests strolling to dinner.

Staying at Hotel Falken: A Step Back in Time

In Wengen, I checked into Hotel Falken, a historic alpine retreat dating back to the late 19th century. Stepping inside feels like entering a bygone era, creaky wooden floors, vintage decor, and cozy reading rooms that seem made for curling up with a cup of tea after a day in the mountains. The balcony from my room offered panoramic views of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and the Jungfrau massif, a sight that’s even more magical at sunset.

The hotel’s warm hospitality and old-world charm make it a perfect base for exploring the region, especially if you appreciate a place with history and character rather than just modern luxury.

Journey to the Top of Europe

No trip to Wengen or Lauterbrunnen is complete without a ride to the Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe. The train journey itself is unforgettable, passing through alpine meadows, climbing higher into the mountains, and eventually tunneling through the Eiger. At the summit, 3,454 meters (11,332 feet) above sea level, you step out into a world of snow and ice, with sweeping views of the Aletsch Glacier and surrounding peaks.

Whether you’re walking through the Ice Palace, snapping photos on the Sphinx Observatory platform, or simply standing in awe of the alpine panorama, the experience feels like standing on top of the world.

Why Wengen & Lauterbrunnen Should Be on Your List

This corner of Switzerland is more than just a scenic stop, it’s a full alpine experience. From hearing the roar of waterfalls in Lauterbrunnen to waking up to mountain views in Wengen, from savoring hearty Swiss cuisine to breathing in pure mountain air, every moment feels restorative.

If you’re dreaming of a trip that combines natural beauty, cultural charm, and a touch of old-world hospitality, Wengen and Lauterbrunnen deliver in every season. And if you can, stay at Hotel Falken, not just for a place to sleep, but for a piece of alpine history.
