Years ago, while browsing the internet, I found a photograph that stopped me cold. It showed a narrow Swiss valley framed by towering cliffs, with a single ribbon of water tumbling dramatically from the sky. It looked almost too perfect, like something from a fairy tale. A waterfall overlooking a town in the Swiss Alps, I had a dream of going there.
Promising myself that someday I would see that waterfall with my own eyes. In the summer of 2024, I finally did, along with my family and the real thing did not just match the picture, it far exceeded it.
First Impressions of Lauterbrunnen
Stepping off the train into Lauterbrunnen felt like walking into the photograph I had been carrying in my imagination for years. The air was crisp, the valley lush and green, and there it was: Staubbach Falls, plunging nearly 1,000 feet from the cliffside and catching the sunlight as it drifted into mist.
Lauterbrunnen is not just about one waterfall. It is known as the Valley of 72 Waterfalls, and as you walk through the meadows you see cascade after cascade, each with its own charm. The constant sound of rushing water becomes the soundtrack of your visit, mixing with the soft clanging of cowbells from the hillsides.
Wengen: A Car Free Mountain Haven
From Lauterbrunnen, a short cogwheel train ride took us up the mountain to Wengen, a peaceful car free village with views of the valley that seem almost unreal. We stayed at a local hotel, Hotel Falken, with fantastic views. Without the noise of traffic, the entire atmosphere felt calmer and more serene. Charming chalets line the streets, flower boxes spill with colorful blooms, and the surrounding peaks seem close enough to touch. We strolled around town, visiting local shops and taking in the atmosphere.
Wengen has a relaxed, timeless quality that makes it hard to leave. It is not just a place to stay; it feels like part of the adventure.
Grindelwald: The Gateway to the Eiger
Not far from Lauterbrunnen is Grindelwald, another gem of the Bernese Oberland. Surrounded by dramatic peaks including the imposing Eiger, Grindelwald blends postcard perfect scenery with a lively alpine atmosphere. We spent the day wandering through its streets, sipping coffee at cafés with mountain views, and riding cable cars to even more breathtaking vantage points.
From here, hiking trails and mountain excursions stretch in every direction, each one offering a view that makes you stop in your tracks.
Exceeding Every Expectation
When you imagine a place for years there is always the risk it will not live up to your hopes. Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, and Grindelwald did not just meet my expectations; they far surpassed them. The colors were richer, the air fresher, and the mountains more majestic than I ever imagined.
That photo online was beautiful, but it was only a small glimpse of the real magic of being there. Standing in the valley, watching waterfalls tumble from the cliffs, and being surrounded by alpine peaks that seem to guard the land is an experience no photograph can fully capture.
We left Switzerland with more than just pictures. I left with the feeling that sometimes the dreams we carry for years really can come true, and when they do, they are even more extraordinary than we imagined. For my family, it was an experience that might not be able to be repeated. It's not an easy place to get to, but it's on my list to revisit once I can check off some more bucket list locations.
